He started at BT Financial Group then served as senior vice president for two years at JP Morgan. He joined ING Australia in 2003 as Life Risk's head of customer service where he was responsible for managing the underwriting and claims teams. Patterson was appointed head of Master Trust in 2007. His vision is to grow insurance within ING's Master Trust and deliver solutions that make insurance easier for Australians.
